MonaLisa Touch Q & A

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch is a laser based treatment system that can resolve issues including Urinary Incontinence, Chronic Vaginal Infections, Painful Intercourse, and Vaginal Burning/Itching. The MonaLisa Touch laser can also help with vaginal laxity by tightening the vaginal tissues. This type of treatment is entirely non-surgical and is minimally invasive.

How Does the Treatment Work?

The treatment is performed with a fractional CO2 laser. The treatment is performed while in the doctor's office, no hospital stay is required. An anesthetic cream may be applied first to help minimize any discomfort during the treatment. As the patient lays comfortably on the exam table, the doctor will deliver carbon dioxide directly to the exposed vaginal tissue. The treatment is a fairly short one, taking only around half an hour from beginning to end for most patients.

What is the Recovery From MonaLisa Touch Like?

The recovery from MonaLisa Touch treatment is specific to the patient, but most women don't experience any pain after their treatment. The doctor can recommend pain relief options, including the application of ice packs, that are highly effective for people who do have mild pain after the MonaLisa Touch treatment. Patients should avoid sexual intercourse for at least 2 days after the treatment. Other than that, there are no restrictions, and patients can return to their usual routines right away. Most women are able to go back to work after the procedure if desired.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

This varies by patient. Some people experience dramatic symptom relief after only a session or two. Overall, most women find that 3 to 4 MonaLisa Touch treatment sessions are able to fully resolve their symptoms and concerns. The treatment sessions are typically spaced about 40 to 60 days apart, which allows the vaginal tissue time to rejuvenate and heal itself naturally between sessions.
